Kaiketsu Zubat (快傑ズバット, Kaiketsu Zubatto), translated into English as Swift Hero Zubat, Extraordinary Zubat or Vigilante Zubat, is a tokusatsu superhero series that on TV Tokyo in 1977. Created by Shotaro Ishinomori, this 32-episode series harkens back to tokusatsu superhero shows of the 1950s, but with a late-70s twist. The series was released on Japanese DVD in 2008.

Overview[]

This work was originally planned as a follow-up program of Chojin Bibyun (NET TV), which was broadcast from the previous year, but at the same time, Ninja Captor, which was being broadcast on Tokyo Channel 12, was discontinued, so it was changed to a program later[1]. After Bibyun, the TV anime Glacier Warrior Guy Slugger (TV Asahi series, produced by Toei and Toei Agency) was assigned.

Hideyoshi Nagasaka, who wrote most of the script, has a unique world view, and Hiroshi Miyauchi, who plays the main character, is highly popular among many tokusatsu hero programs for his unique dialogue and flexible acting[2]. Immediately after the end of this work, Miyauchi joined the regular role of JAKQ DengekitaiIcon-crosswiki (TV Asahi series) as the action leader Big OneIcon-crosswiki as a measure to strengthen it. It is said that the exaggerated play that inherited the tension of Ken Hayakawa had a great influence on the role creation, and it was said that the four main characters were seen as subordinates.

Main writer Nagasaka wrote 30 out of 32 episodes. He explained why he left two episodes (episodes 7 and 12) to other scriptwriters, saying, "I thought it would last for a year, so I thought I wouldn't be able to write it all by myself." However, the difference in style was noticeable, so he decided to write the rest by himself. He ended up with 32 episodes, so he said, "If I had known it would be the case from the beginning, I would have written it all myself."[3]
